Why bone disappears

Jaw bone exists to support teeth. Once a tooth is gone the bone that held it resorbs, and most of that loss happens in the first year. Periodontal disease, infection, trauma and long term denture wear all accelerate it.

The practical consequence is that a site which would have taken an implant easily a year ago may no longer have the width or the height for one.

The procedures

Ridge preservation is a graft placed at the moment a tooth is removed, which holds the shape of the ridge while it heals. Ridge augmentation rebuilds a site that has already collapsed. A sinus augmentation raises the floor of the maxillary sinus to create vertical room in the upper back jaw.

Graft material may be your own bone, processed donor bone, mineral of bovine origin, or a synthetic. The choice follows the size of the defect and the job the graft has to do, and we will tell you what is being used and why.

Healing

A ridge preservation graft adds little to the recovery from the extraction itself. Larger reconstructive grafts need protected healing and are given time to mature, commonly four to nine months, before an implant goes into them.

Ask about bone grafting at either office.

Your consultation includes a thorough examination, review of the necessary X-rays, and a clear explanation of what we find. We'll walk you through your options, answer your questions, and help you understand what comes next.
