When a tooth cannot be kept

The decision about the space comes first
Bone begins to resorb the moment the root is gone. That means the question of how the space will be restored is best settled before the tooth is out, not months afterwards when the ridge has already collapsed.
Where an implant is likely, a ridge preservation graft placed at the time of extraction keeps the site shaped for it. Where it is not, we will say so rather than graft by reflex.
Afterwards
Written instructions covering bleeding, swelling, diet and activity. Firm pressure on gauze for the first hour, no smoking, no straws and no vigorous rinsing on the first day are what most reliably prevent a dry socket. If something does not feel right, we would rather hear from you early.
