Why a periodontist places implants
Periodontics is the specialty of the tissue and bone that support teeth. An implant succeeds or fails on exactly that: whether the bone integrates with it and whether the gum around it stays healthy. Placing implants is part of periodontal residency training for that reason.
It also means the same person assessing the site is the one who treats the gum disease that may have caused the tooth to be lost in the first place. Placing an implant into an untreated mouth is how implants are lost.

Planning the site
A cone beam CT scan gives the height, width and density of bone at the site and shows where the sinus and the nerve sit. From that we work backwards from where the tooth needs to be, not from where the bone happens to be.
If the site is short of bone, grafting comes first and the implant follows once the graft has matured. Where the anatomy allows it, extraction, grafting and implant placement can sometimes be combined into one appointment.
Timeline and restoration
Integration usually takes three to six months, depending on the site and whether grafting was needed. A temporary is arranged so a visible space is never left open.
We place and your restorative dentist restores. The sequence is agreed between the two practices before surgery, so nobody is waiting on an unclear handover.

How long do implants last?
An integrated implant is designed to be permanent. Long term success depends on the same things natural teeth depend on: hygiene, healthy gum tissue and regular professional care.
Can an implant get gum disease?
Yes. Peri implantitis is an inflammatory disease around an implant that behaves much like periodontitis around a tooth, and it is one of the reasons implants are followed rather than simply placed and forgotten.

Your restorative dentist. We handle the surgical phase and hand back for the abutment and crown.
